Acme (Standard) vs European Threads

Broom and brush handles often have threaded ends, or ends that require screwing into a brush or broom with the pairing thread insert. At R.S. Quality Products, we offer products with both acme (standard) andEuropean thread types.

American broom and brush manufacturers make acme threaded handles and brushes. European brush manufacturers make handles with European threads. The two types of handles are not interchangeable. For example, you cannot use a handle with acme threads on a floor brush that has European Threads.

When purchasing products, there aren’t many advantages to one kind over the other. However, it is vital you purchase the matching thread type. Below are some details to help you understand these different thread types.

Acme (Standard) Thread

Tip with acme (standard) threads

• These tips fit into a brush, squeegee, or other tool that has the matching female acme threads.
• Acme threads can be cut directly on the end of a wood handle, or can be made of plastic or metal, and then fastened to the end of the handle.
• There can be slight variations the male and female threads, which can lead to a sloppy fit, or one that is too tight to get the tip all the way in the female thread. You may have to request a different handle if this happens as the tip is more likely to break.

European Thread

Tip with European Threads

• These threads are finer than the acme threads.
• The male part of the tip usually screws into the female part all the way to the first “shoulder.”
• The female part of the tool receives both the threaded part and smooth part just behind the threads. This gives a solid fit, therefore minimizing loosening and breakage.
